Create a HOPE Kit to Support Your Mental Health

In the pursuit of a vibrant, fulfilling life, we invest in so many things: fitness memberships, financial plans, and stylish wardrobes. But how often do we proactively invest in the one thing that powers it all – our mental health? At Suspenders4Hope®, we believe that just as you keep a physical first-aid kit for bumps and scrapes, you need an emotional first-aid kit for life’s inevitable mental and emotional challenges. We call it a HOPE Kit.

A HOPE Kit is a personalized, tangible box of resources designed to support you when life feels overwhelming. Rooted in evidence-based treatments like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a HOPE Kit is your roadmap back to calm during intense moments. It’s a pre-planned anchor, reminding you of your strength and reasons for living when you need them most.

The beauty of the HOPE Kit is that it’s entirely yours. It should be filled with items and reminders that ground you, self-soothe your senses, and reconnect you to the present moment. Here is our guide to building your own powerful tool for mental wellness.

How to Build Your Personalized HOPE Kit

Start by finding a container – a decorative box, a shoebox, or even a specific shelf – and fill it using the following five categories of coping strategies:

  • #1 Distract: Take Your Mind Off Your Troubles

When negative rumination sets in, interruption is key. Fill your kit with simple activities that require focus.

Ideas: A colouring book and coloured pencils, a fun paperback book, Sudoku or crossword puzzles, a deck of cards, or a handwritten list of lighthearted movies to watch.

  • #2 Comfort: Engage Your Five Senses

Your senses are powerful grounding tools. Including items that appeal to your senses can shift your emotional state quickly.

Ideas: A small jar of scented essential oil or lotion, a piece of dark chocolate or hand candy, a silky or fuzzy item (like a soft scarf or socks), as a list of calming songs or nature sounds to listen.

  • #3 Improve the Moment: Intentional Shift

These items help you move from a state of distress to one of intention and gratitude.

Ideas: A journal and pen for reflective writing, a blank card for writing a gratitude list, inspirational quotes or spiritual texts, or a small stone or pebble to use for meditation.

  • #4 Mindfulness: Be Present Without Judgment

Mindfulness brings you into the “now,” disrupting the spiral of worry about the past or future.

Ideas: Instructions for a deep breathing exercise (like 4-7-8 breathing), a small object to focus on intently (a beautiful leaf, a figurine), or a small chime or bell to ring, focusing only on the sound until it fades.

  • #5 Reach Out: Connect with Support

No one is meant to struggle alone. Include critical safety information and reminders of connection.

Ideas: Photos of loved ones and happy memories, meaningful letters or encouraging notes, and most importantly, a list of crucial contact information: trusted friend, your counsellor, and the national crisis hotline, 988.

Once assembled, place your HOPE Kit somewhere easily accessible, like a nightstand or desk drawer. Remember, building this kit is an act of self-care and resilience. You are creating a tangible commitment to your well-being. By taking this step, you’re not just preparing for a crisis – you are empowering yourself for a brighter, more hopeful tomorrow.
