General FAQ
Suspenders4Hope™ are a visible symbol for community support of mental health. The campaign empowers communities to help end the stigma and share their lived experiences with mental health and suicide. We did not want the campaign to be about a single department supporting mental health, or even the University supporting campus mental health, but all of us supporting each other because that is the only way we will reduce deaths of despair.
The idea came from a beloved psychologist on campus who took his role in freshman student orientation very seriously playing the game show host in his bow tie and suspenders to help students become familiar with campus mental health services. Students started affectionately calling him Dr. Suspenders on campus. We thought, “Hey, suspenders support your pants. Now how can we use this to encourage students to support each other?”.
We aim to become the national symbol of community mental health support and the campaign has already reached 12 states.
