Listen to the following scenarios:

Scenario 1

You are in a night class with a young woman named Jenny. She recently broke up with her boyfriend and has seemed especially sad since that time. You ask how she is doing and she says, “I’m just really sad that my boyfriend and I broke up.”

Scenario 2

You work with a young man named John who keeps to himself most of the time, and he always seems pretty blue. Recently, however, he has come to work smelling like alcohol. When you ask him what is going on, he says he is out of money and doesn’t know if he “can go on like this anymore.”

Scenario 3

While at the gym, you encounter one of your acquaintances, Tony, who always acts very tired and sad, but today he seems to be in a much better mood. When you ask him why he seems happy, he says, “I finally got approved to buy a gun.”
